ALAN SHEARER GIVES DAMNING VERDICT ON MARCUS RASHFORD'S EURO 2024 HOPES AMID ENGLAND 'RISK'

Alan Shearer believes Marcus Rashford is not certain of his place in England ’s squad for the Euros.

The Manchester United forward has experienced a downturn in form this season. After scoring 30 goals last term, Rashford has scored on just eight occasions this campaign - albeit he's scored in each of his last three outings for the Red Devils.

That lean spell has extended onto the international stage with the forward finding the net just twice for England since the start of 2023. Shearer claims that Rashford’s place in the Three Lions squad could be in jeopardy ahead of this summer’s Euros in Germany.

Writing for The Athletic, he said: “If Rashford plays well between now and the end of the season, then that could potentially force the manager’s hand. But I don’t think he’s a certainty to go, no.

“He’s not a centre-forward, he doesn’t want to play there. He’d be going as a wide forward who can play as a striker in an emergency. You can tell from his body language that he doesn’t want to play there for Manchester United. If he’s going to be in the squad, it wouldn’t be ahead of Harry Kane, Watkins or Toney, it’d be as a wide forward.”

Rashford has already been tipped to lose out. The United forward and his rival for a left-wing role, Jack Grealish, are at risk of missing out on the tournament altogether, even if UEFA allow nations to name 26-man squads.

Rashford was also only afforded 15 minutes of game time during the latest round of international fixtures - that short cameo coming in the 1-0 defeat to Brazil at Wembley. Gareth Southgate has since explained that he wanted to take a look at other options instead.

Asked if Rashford’s omission was down to injury, he replied: “No, I wanted to see Anthony Gordon again. I thought he had an excellent impact in the first game and I thought that [James] Maddison coming into that area could open things up for us a bit.”

Rashford now has limited opportunities to impress Southgate ahead of the Euros getting underway. United have ten games of the Premier League season to go, starting with this weekend’s clash with Brentford. The Red Devils also remain in the FA Cup and will take on Championship side Coventry in the semi-finals. Elsewhere, England take on Bosnia and Herzegovina and then Iceland in pre-tournament friendlies in early June.
