MARCUS RASHFORD'S ATTITUDE WOULDN'T BE TOLERATED AT A 'PROPER CLUB' BLASTS GRAEME SOUNESS

Graeme Souness has slammed Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford and claimed his work ethic would not be tolerated at a "proper football club".

Rashford, 26, has been criticised for his application and attitude in recent months with his United form taking a major decline this season. In fact, he has scored just eight times in 40 appearances, a considerable drop off compared to the 30 goals he netted last term.

As well as his attacking contribution coming under question, his defensive work has been criticised with Mark Hughes and Jamie O'Hara among those slamming his work rate off the ball. And now, Souness has become the latest to lament the job Rashford is doing out of possession.

Souness picked out an incident from United's win over Luton in February that spoke volumes about Rashford and his work rate. The former Liverpool midfielder also highlighted that, as well as Rashford, Bruno Fernandes might be another that does not do "the hard yards" when working back to help his team.

Speaking on Three Up Front, William Hill’s new podcast, Souness said: "Bruno Fernandes is a talented player, but would he fit into Manchester City’s team? He’s got the qualities to do that but does he have the appetite to do the hard yards, maybe we’ll never find out.

"When I was a player, no one was given permission to not track back, you’d sprint forward, and even quicker coming back – no one was given a pass.

"I’d say that’s how it has been before my time and even now for the very best teams. If you’re at a proper club with proper professionals, you’re doing that in training each day and if you’re not, they’ll come after you. The coach doesn’t even have to say it, that’s what happens at the big clubs.

"This should be hammered into you in the training sessions, what Marcus Rashford showed against Ross Barkley when they played Luton a few weeks ago, means he must’ve been doing that in training.

"If he was doing that at a proper football club, they’d be all over him to the point where there would be fallouts, and if they didn’t learn, they’d think about selling you."

Rashford has missed the last three matches but could return for this weekend's game against Arsenal. United face three more Premier League games before the FA Cup final against Manchester City.
