Tough recent times at Mahia Golf Club have strengthened the resilience and determination of its members.
Lee Steel’s performance at the Emerre and Hathaway Poverty Bay Women’s Open this week is testament to that.
Steel competed in the 36-hole Stableford section of the two-day tournament, which also featured five divisions of matchplay and an 18-hole competition played over two nines on each day.
Steel won the Midway Plate division 1 Stableford with a whopping haul of 84 points – 45 of those in her 88-23-65 on Monday.
Royal Grange & Auckland member Sue Talbot won the Waikoko Salver division 2 title with 78 points, while Hutt Park’s Jean Clayton won the Wainui Plate division 3 title with 81.
Home-course player Leigh Fletcher’s 42 points topped the Tatapouri Salver division 1 on countback from Poverty Bay’s Pip Dymock in the 18-hole Stableford.
Another local, Pauline Zame, racked up 44 to take the Rosebowl division 2 honours.
Organisers were delighted with how it went.
“A great field, great weather, great fun and wonderful organisation by all involved,” Poverty Bay women’s club captain Anne Gemmell said.

A Yates family double was the highlight of the 2024 club championships.
Bruce Yates won the senior men’s title while son Murray collected the intermediate crown.
Yates senior proved too good for Taine Lincoln, winning 7 and 6. Toby Williams conceded his match to Murray.
Watene Reedy beat Gary McLean 4 and 3 in the junior final.

Larry Green, Val Grace and Regan Hindmarsh impressed as they claimed major prizes in the Waikohu Open Closing Day tournament on Saturday.
Waikohu pair Green and Grace won the Canadian foursomes Stableford with 41 points, two ahead of Richard Reeves and Andrea Reeves on 39.
Patutahi’s Hindmarsh had two pars and two birdies in his men’s gross-winning even-par 70.
Clubmate Jace Brown had five birdies as he won the Stableford with 32 points and home-course player Tama Brown won the net with 72.

Pauline Summersby and Hiria McClutchie will do battle to decide the 2024 intermediate women’s club champion.
Summersby outgunned Aomihi Cook 7 and 6 in their semifinal clash while McClutchie defeated Iritanga Ngarimu 3 and 2.
Several men’s club championship matches were played on Sunday.
James Forrester defeated Kahu Waitoa; Thomas Donovan defeated Mark Higham; Henry Rasmussen defeated Daryl Goldsmith; and Eruera West defeated Bill Clark.

Two names will go up on the honours board as 2024 club champions.
It has been a couple of years of trials and tribulations for Tahunga after destructive weather events but the club is battling back and its season came to an end last Sunday with its closing day.
It came a couple of weeks after the club championships, which featured only two men’s divisions this year – senior and intermediate.
Both titles were hard-earned. Spencer Butt was favoured to add another senior crown and did, just. He beat Tom “Maverick” Stewart on the 36th hole.
The intermediate final also went all the way, with Claude Smith defeating Ben Johnson, also on the 36th.

Sel Pohatu has had a short but victoriously sweet time on a 10-handicap.
The long-time single-figure player teed off in Sunday’s club competition on a 10, then proceeded to shoot his best round since February 2022 – 73-10-63.
His 43 points won him the senior men’s Stableford and returned him to single-digit status.
Peter “Chopper” Summersby was in similarly warm form. His junior division-winning 80-15-65, for 41 points, featured the jackpot of two twos.

Dan Collier and Glen McKinnon have set a hot pace in qualifying for the men’s club championships.
Four-time senior champion Collier fired a two-under 66, including six birdies, on the composite par 68 course.
McKinnon had two twos in his 74, which leads the intermediate division.
Players have been given an extra weekend to post qualifying scores.
The King Cup women’s 27-hole tournament is being held on Sunday.
