ANDY MURRAY ISSUES UPDATE ON INJURY AS BRITISH STAR FACES SPELL ON SIDELINES

Andy Murray will miss the next two tournaments after picking up an ankle injury at the Miami Open.

The Scot is in the twilight period of his playing days and has openly spoken about retiring sooner rather than later. He enjoyed an impressive recent run at the Florida tournament, where he was eventually beaten in a final set tiebreak by Tomas Machac. Earlier in the contest though Murray chased down a ball but pulled up, screaming in pain before he hit the floor clutching his left ankle.

The three-time Grand Slam winner managed to continue but later said he feared he had ruptured ankle ligaments and was facing an "extended period" on the sidelines. But those fears have been alleviated with Murray revealing he will only miss the opening two tournaments of the clay court season. The Scot is “continuing to review options with his medical team” as he plots for a farewell appearance at Wimbledon this summer.

Murray has seen a specialist in London and an update has been issued: “Following consultation with his team and medical experts, Andy Murray has taken the decision to miss the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters and BMW Open Munich. At this stage, it is still not clear how long Andy will be out of action, and he is continuing to review options with his medical team. Obviously this is very disappointing news for Andy and he has reiterated his desire to get back on court as soon as possible. He thanks all his fans for their kind messages of support and will continue to update everybody as the situation evolves.”

Murray has had to answers questions regarding his future for several months and, after saying his farewells to the Miami Open for the final time, he confessed that he is looking forward to calling it a day with the constant speculation becoming a drain. He said: "I wasn't thinking about all the matches I played. Just more that that's the last match that I am going play here which is sad because I love it here. I've spent so much of my tennis career here and I would have liked it to have gone on a little bit longer.

"This tournament particularly for me is an important one so it was a bit more emotional leaving the court today than it might be at some of the other events. I am looking forward to the end now, give my best the next few months and get to be at home with my family."
