Bruno Fernandes has received huge praise after scoring a supremely confident penalty during Portugal's shootout win over Slovenia on Monday evening.

The Euro 2024 last-16 tie had to be settled via penalties after the contest at the Frankfurt Arena ended goalless following 120 minutes of action.

Cristiano Ronaldo could have won the game for Portugal and avoided the spot-kick decider but was left in floods of tears as he missed a late penalty.

Nerves were high in the ranks of Roberto Martinez's squad as the match went to sudden death after team-mates watched Ronaldo scupper his effort, but Fernandes remained one of the coolest players on show.

The Manchester United captain is a penalty specialist, missing only six of 60 career spot-kicks, but is second in the national team pecking order when it comes to scoring from 12-yards.

Fernandes' unique run-up see's the 29-year-old perform a hop, skip and jump before typically firing his shot into one of the corners once the goalkeeper has made his move.

Against Slovenia, Fernandes wasted no time as he ran up to the spot and rolled his effort past Oblak with ease to give Portugal control of the shootout.

A muted celebration followed as the playmaker calmly punched the air, while his team-mates jumped ecstatically on the halfway line.

Man United fans wasted no time in lumping praise on the midfielder who had created several goalscoring chances throughout the game that Portugal failed to convert.

Posting on X, one supporter said: 'Watching this Bruno Fernandes penalty again, as cool as you like.'

Another added: 'Can’t stop thinking about Bruno’s penalty man, he was so gangsta.'

A third United fan post stated: 'Bruno’s penalty last night was actually too cold, he had absolutely no right doing that.'

'You won't see a better penalty all tournament. Bruno Fernandes,' said another alongside a series of clapping emojis.

Fernandes is expected to start Friday's Euro 2024 quarter-final clash against France as Portugal attempt to reach to final four.
